Founded on 15 February 1972, the Asociación Nacional Presencia Gitana was recorded in the Spanish Registry of Associations on 28 December 1979. It’s a civil, non-confessional and apolitical, intercultural and multiracial, social and non-profit-making NGO. It has been declared of public utility and recognized as a sociological phenomenon in 1979, and has received the Human Rights National Award in 1999 and Evens Prize that same year.
Among its objective it pursues : to make evident and to maintain the real, active and jointly responsible presence of the Gypsy Community in Spanish society and in the international context; to deal with and correct the discriminating attitudes of rejection, exclusion, intolerance and racism of some human groups towards others; to move obstacles which prevent the Gypsy Community – and other minority groups – reaching full citizenship, legal equality and equal opportunities; to promote initiatives to favour the historical restauration, the recognition of the Gypsy People, a transnational community with a multi-state base, and of its cultural autonomy; to recover, strengthen, develop and spread the Gypsy Cultural Heritage. From its contribution to understanding and human communication between people, ethnic groups and cultures, we can underline: its intercultural school "Can ta Chimutrí" ("Sun and Moon"), in which children and future citizens from forty countries between the age of four months and three years have coexisted since 1985; Presencia Gitana Publishing House, which publishes its Biblioteca de Temas Gitanos y Afines since 1987, and the Interface Collection in a European network; its several Community projects of cooperation, with the support of the European Commission ("Imago Europa XXI", "Dromèsqere Euroskòla", "The Romany/Gypsy Presence in the European Music"...).
